Most Asked Questions About Uganda’s National Parks.

  1. Do I need a visa to visit Uganda’s national parks?
  2. Yes. Most visitors need a tourist visa. You can apply online for an e-visa before travel. East African Tourist Visa also works for Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.

2. Are the parks safe?
Yes. Uganda’s parks are very safe with armed rangers on all activities. Follow your guide’s instructions and you’ll be fine.

3. What should I pack?
Hiking boots, long pants, rain jacket, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, camera, insect repellent, and neutral-colored clothes. Mornings and nights can be cold.

4. How much does gorilla trekking cost?
A gorilla permit is $800 per person per day for foreign non-residents. It includes park entry and a ranger guide. Book 6-12 months in advance.

5. Can I see the Big 5 in Uganda?
Yes, but rhinos are only at Ziwa Sanctuary outside Murchison. You can see lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo inside the parks.

6. What’s the difference between Bwindi and Mgahinga for gorillas?
Bwindi has more gorilla families and sectors, so easier to get permits. Mgahinga is smaller, less crowded, and you can also do golden monkeys.

7. Is it better to self-drive or use a tour company?
Roads can be rough and park rules require guides for activities. Most visitors use a tour company for transport, permits, and logistics.

8. Can children go on safari?
For gorilla trekking the minimum age is 15. For game drives and boat cruises, children of any age are welcome.

9. Is Uganda expensive?
It depends. Park fees and gorilla permits are the main cost. Accommodation ranges from $50 budget to $1000+ luxury per night. Compared to Kenya/Tanzania, Uganda gives more unique experiences per dollar.

10. What animals will I definitely see?
No guarantees in the wild. But in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison you’ll almost always see elephants, hippos, antelopes, and lots of birds. For gorillas and chimps, permits give you the best chance.

Which Park Should You Choose?

For Gorillas: Bwindi or Mugahinga

For Classic Safari + Falls: Murchison Falls For Diversity + Boat Cruise: Queen Elizabeth

For Chimps: Kibale

For Short Trip from Kampala: Lake Mburo Most travelers combine 2-3 parks in a 7-10 day trip.

A common route is: Entebbe → Murchison → Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi → Lake Mburo → Kampala.Uganda’s parks are less crowded than Kenya or Tanzania, and the experiences are more intimate. You don’t just see wildlife here, you connect with it.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
