What Can a Tourist Do in Rwanda? The Land of a Thousand Hills Awaits

Rwanda is small in size but huge in experiences. Often called the Land of a Thousand Hills, this beautiful country will surprise you at every turn. From meeting mountain gorillas to relaxing on tropical lakes, there is something for every traveler.

So, what can a tourist do in Rwanda? Here are the top 10 must-do experiences handpicked by Lena Tours.

1. Go Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
This is the number one reason tourists visit Rwanda. Trekking through the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park to meet a family of mountain gorillas is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. You will spend one magical hour watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful babies. Therefore, it is an experience you will never forget. Permits are $1,500, so booking early with Lena Tours is essential.

2. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial
Rwanda’s history is powerful. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a moving and important place to visit. It honors the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and teaches a story of incredible resilience and unity. In fact, every tourist should visit to understand the true spirit of Rwanda.

3. Safari in Akagera National Park
Did you know Rwanda has a Big 5 safari? Akagera National Park in Eastern Rwanda is home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos. In addition, you can enjoy boat safaris on Lake Ihema to see hippos and crocodiles. It is perfect for combining with gorilla trekking.

4. Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Here, you can trek to see 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and the rare Rwenzori colobus monkeys. Furthermore, you can experience the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk – a 70-meter high bridge with breathtaking forest views.

5. Relax on Lake Kivu
After trekking, you need to relax. Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and one of the most beautiful. You can swim, kayak, take a boat to Napoleon Island to see fruit bats, or simply enjoy the beach in Gisenyi or Kibuye. The sunsets here are magical.

6. Explore Kigali City – The Cleanest City in Africa
Kigali will impress you. It is clean, safe, and vibrant. You can visit Kimironko Market for colorful fabrics, art galleries, coffee shops, and enjoy the buzzing nightlife. Moreover, Kigali is a great base for your Rwanda tour.

7. Cultural Experiences – Meet the Locals
Rwandan culture is warm and welcoming. You can visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village near Volcanoes to experience traditional dances, learn about the King’s palace, and try local banana beer.

8. Hike Bisoke Volcano or the Congo Nile Trail
For adventure lovers, Rwanda has amazing hiking. You can hike Mount Bisoke (3,711m) to see a stunning crater lake at the top, or trek a section of the 227km Congo Nile Trail along Lake Kivu for incredible views of hills and villages.

9. Bird Watching Paradise
Rwanda is a birders’ dream with over 700 species. From the rare Shoebill in Akagera to Albertine Rift endemics in Nyungwe, you will be amazed. Therefore, bring your binoculars.

10. Taste Rwandan Coffee and Cuisine
Finally, don’t leave without tasting Rwanda’s world-famous coffee. Visit a coffee plantation, and enjoy local dishes like brochettes and Isombe.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. During this time, gorilla trekking trails are easier and safari viewing is excellent.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Me and my friends went to Murchison Falls with Dominic for 3 days and had the most amazing time! Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! Will definitely be back to Uganda soon and book a safari with Dominic again!!!

We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
