Best Places To See The Big Five On A Safari In Uganda

Uganda is known as the Pearl of Africa for a reason. While many travelers come for gorilla trekking, a Big Five safari in Uganda offers one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences on the continent. The Big Five – lion, leopard, African elephant, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros – are a must-see for any safari lover.

Unlike other countries, you can see all of the Big Five in Uganda in one trip if you know where to go. Here are the top destinations you should not miss.

1. Murchison Falls National Park – The Best Overall Park For Big Five

If you want the highest chance to see four of the Big Five in one park, Murchison Falls National Park is number one. It is Uganda’s largest and oldest national park.

Here you will find large herds of African elephants and Cape buffaloes grazing on the savanna, lions resting under trees, and elusive leopards, especially during evening game drives.

For the fifth member, the rhino, most itineraries combine Murchison Falls with Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary which is on the way from Kampala.

2. Queen Elizabeth National Park – Best For Tree-Climbing Lions

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular savanna park and one of the best places to see the Big Five safari in Uganda.

The Kasenyi plains are famous for lions, elephants, buffaloes, and with luck, leopards. The real highlight is the Ishasha sector in the south of the park, world-famous for its tree-climbing lions. Seeing lions lounging in fig trees is a rare sight you will only find in a few places in Africa.

A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel is also unforgettable. You will see hundreds of elephants and buffaloes coming to drink water at the channel banks.

3. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – The Only Place To See Rhinos In The Wild

Rhinos were extinct in the wild in Uganda due to poaching, but thanks to conservation efforts at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, they are back.

Located on the road to Murchison Falls, Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where you can see white rhinos in their natural habitat. You will do a guided walking safari to track the rhinos on foot, which is a thrilling and safe experience with rangers. No Big Five safari in Uganda is complete without stopping here.

4. Kidepo Valley National Park – The Wild And Remote Experience

For travelers looking for an off-the-beaten-path Uganda Big Five safari, Kidepo Valley National Park in the far northeast is perfect. It is ranked as one of Africa’s most beautiful parks.

Kidepo has a very healthy population of lions, including big prides, plus elephants, buffaloes, and leopards. Rhinos are not yet in Kidepo, but the park offers the most authentic and crowd-free game drives in Uganda. If you want to see cheetahs, this is also the only park in Uganda where you have a chance.

5. Lake Mburo National Park – Best For Close Encounters Near Kampala

Lake Mburo is the closest savanna park to Kampala and Entebbe, just 4 hours away. While it does not have lions in large numbers, it is excellent for buffaloes, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and many antelopes. You can combine it with Ziwa, Queen Elizabeth, and Murchison Falls to complete your Big Five checklist in a short Uganda safari.

Best Time To See The Big Five In Uganda

The best time for a Big Five safari in Uganda is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. During these months, vegetation is thinner and animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot.

2. Which is the best park for a Big Five safari in Uganda?
Murchison Falls National Park is considered the best overall park for a Big Five safari in Uganda because it has the largest numbers of elephants and buffaloes, a good population of lions and leopards, and it is located close to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. However, many travelers choose to combine Murchison Falls with Queen Elizabeth National Park to increase their chances of seeing tree-climbing lions and leopards. Budget group tours start from around $800 per person, while mid-range private safaris cost between $1500 to $3000 per person. Luxury lodges will cost more. The park entry fees, rhino tracking fees, and game drive costs are included in most safari packages, making Uganda one of the best value destinations for seeing the Big Five in Africa.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Me and my friends went to Murchison Falls with Dominic for 3 days and had the most amazing time! Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! Will definitely be back to Uganda soon and book a safari with Dominic again!!!

We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
