How Much Does It Cost to Track Gorillas in Uganda?

One of the first questions every traveler asks is: How much does it cost to track gorillas in Uganda?

Gorilla tracking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and Uganda offers the most affordable way to do it in Africa. Here is a complete cost breakdown for 2026 to help you plan your budget.

1. Gorilla Permit Cost in Uganda – The Main Cost

The biggest part of your cost is the gorilla permit. This is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

– Gorilla tracking permit cost in Uganda: $800 per person per trek for foreign non-residents
– Gorilla habituation permit cost: $1500 per person (you spend 4 hours with the gorillas)

This permit allows you to spend one hour with one habituated gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The permit includes park entry, ranger guide, and security.

Compared to Rwanda where a permit is $1500, Uganda is almost half the price.

2. Full Uganda Gorilla Safari Cost

The permit is not the only cost. You need to consider transport, accommodation, and guide.

A) Budget Gorilla Safari Cost: $1200 – $1800 per person
– 3 days, 2 nights
– Group tour (6-8 people)
– Basic lodges and public transport or shared safari van
– 1 gorilla permit included
– This is best for backpackers and solo travelers joining a group.

B) Mid-Range Gorilla Safari Cost: $1800 – $3000 per person
– 3 to 4 days
– Private 4×4 safari vehicle with driver-guide
– Comfortable lodges with private bathroom and hot shower
– 1 gorilla permit included
– Most popular choice for couples and friends.

C) Luxury Gorilla Safari Cost: $3000 – $6000+ per person
– 3 to 5 days
– Luxury lodges like Buhoma Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, or Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp
– Private charter or fly-in safari
– 1 gorilla permit included
– Best for luxury travelers who want exclusivity.

3. What Is Included in the Cost to Track Gorillas in Uganda?

When you book with a tour operator, your gorilla trekking cost in Uganda usually includes:
– Gorilla permit ($800)
– Transport in 4×4 Land Cruiser
– Professional English-speaking driver-guide
– Accommodation and meals
– Park entry fees
– Bottled water

Not included: International flights, visa, tips, travel insurance, and personal expenses.

4. Hidden Costs You Should Know

– Porter: $15-$20 – Highly recommended. They carry your bag and help you on slippery slopes. This also supports the local community.
– Tips for rangers and guides: $10-$20 per person
– Chimpanzee trekking add-on: $250 per person in Kibale Forest if you want to add it.
– Accommodation upgrade in peak season (June-September, December-February) lodges are more expensive.

5. Why Is Gorilla Tracking So Expensive?

The $800 gorilla permit cost in Uganda goes directly to conservation. 75% is used for gorilla conservation, ranger protection, and park management. 15% goes to local communities around Bwindi to prevent poaching. The high price also limits the number of visitors – only 8 people can visit one gorilla family per day, to protect the gorillas.

Is Gorilla Tracking in Uganda Worth the Cost?

Absolutely yes. For $800 permit price plus safari costs, you get to stand just meters from a wild silverback gorilla family in their natural forest. There is no other wildlife experience like it in the world. Uganda gives you the best value for gorilla tracking compared to Rwanda and Congo.

Tip: Book your gorilla permit 6-12 months in advance, especially if you want to travel in high season. Permits sell out fast.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Me and my friends went to Murchison Falls with Dominic for 3 days and had the most amazing time! Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! Will definitely be back to Uganda soon and book a safari with Dominic again!!!

We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
