Gorilla trekking in bwindi

What People Talk About Gorilla Trekking Experience

If you read 100 reviews about gorilla trekking, you will see the same 5 words over and over: “Once-in-a-lifetime. Magical. Worth it.”

At Lena Tours, we have hosted thousands of trekkers in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Volcanoes National Park. So what do people really talk about after they come face-to-face with mountain gorillas? It’s not just about the gorillas. It’s about the emotion.

Here is what real travelers are saying in 2026:

1. “I Cried. I Got Goosebumps. It’s Emotional.”

This is the number one comment. People expect to see an animal, but they experience a connection.

On Instagram and TripAdvisor, travelers describe standing just 10 meters from a 440-pound silverback like  watching a mother cradle her 5-month-old baby, or seeing juveniles play and wrestle like human cousins. Many say they placed a hand on their chest, had happy tears, or their heart raced just watching the video.

“Seeing the mountain gorillas was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, well worth the arduous trek.” “We have memories to last our lifetime.”

With Lena Tours, you get a full hour with the family. That hour feels like 5 minutes, travelers say.

2. “The Hike Was Hard, But Porters and Guides Made It Easy”

The second most talked-about thing is NOT the gorillas, it’s the trek itself.

People talk about muddy, steep trails at 10,000 feet, hiking 2-3 hours through farmers’ fields, bamboo forest, and dense jungle. They also talk about how essential porters are.

Lena Tours Tip: We include walking sticks, and we always recommend hiring a porter ($20). You support the local community and you enjoy the trek.

3. “Gorillas Don’t Follow Our Rules”

Everyone is told at briefing: keep 10 meters distance, wear a mask, stay in a group of 8.

That unexpected close encounter is what people tell their friends about for years. Our rangers are always there to keep you safe, and as one reviewer noted, “there are no complaints today” – the gorillas are calm and peaceful.

4. “Is It Worth $800 in Uganda / $1500 in Rwanda?”

Yes, cost is a hot topic in comments. Travelers constantly ask about permits.

What people conclude after the trek: YES, absolutely worth it.

5. “Our Guide Made All The Difference”

The final thing people talk about is their guide and driver.

“Twin Dominic was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable… making every journey comfortable.” “Excellent tour… our driver was punctual and glad to share tons of info about the region and culture.”

At Lena Tours, we hear this a lot. A good guide Ranger finds the gorilla family faster, tells you the story of each silverback.

Gorilla trekking is not a zoo visit. It is an emotional, respectful meeting with our closest cousins.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Me and my friends went to Murchison Falls with Dominic for 3 days and had the most amazing time! Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! Will definitely be back to Uganda soon and book a safari with Dominic again!!!

We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
