Chimpazee habituation in Kibale, full day

habituation in kibala

What is Chimpanzee Habituation in Kibale?

In Kibale National Park, rangers are training two wild chimp groups to get used to humans. You join researchers and trackers from morning nest to night nest. You witness how wild chimps learn to accept us. It’s research, not just tourism.

Normal Trekking vs Habituation – The Real Difference:

Normal chimpanzee trekking in Kibale costs $250. You start at 8am in morning, you walk with five other tourists, you find chimps, and you only get one hour with them. After 60 minutes ranger says time up and you must leave. It’s very rushed.

In those six hours you see what one hour trek NEVER shows you. You see chimps hunting red colobus monkeys, you see them using sticks to get honey, you see mating, you see fighting for dominance, you see mothers teaching babies to climb, you see grooming, and you see them building nests. For fifty dollars extra you get five more hours. Best value in Uganda for 2026.

My Full Day Story – Six Hours Breakdown:

You hear pant-hoots echoing in whole forest – amazing wake up call.

At 8am they had breakfast hunting figs.

At 11am my group hunted red colobus monkey.  One hour trek you never see hunting.

At 1pm they took nap and groomed each other. You sit only 10 meters close and take photos. They ignore you.

At 2pm they built new nests for tonight. You witness how smart they are – bending branches to make bed.

Why Kibale is Number One for This in World:

Kibale has 1500 chimps – highest density in whole Africa! 95% success rate of seeing them vs 60% in Budongo forest. Plus you see 13 other primate species in same forest.

Cost and Booking 2026:

Permit for habituation is $300 for foreign non-resident. Only two groups per day, four people each – only eight permits daily! They sell out five months early. Best months are June to September and December to February dry season. Stay at Primate Lodge inside forest – you walk to briefing.

Tips for You:

Best itinerary is combine with Bwindi – three days Kibale plus three days gorillas equals best primate safari in Africa.

Is It Worth It?

If you love primates, photography, or you are tired of rushed one-hour tours – YES. This is the only place in East Africa where you can spend full day with wild chimps from nest to nest.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Me and my friends went to Murchison Falls with Dominic for 3 days and had the most amazing time! Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! Will definitely be back to Uganda soon and book a safari with Dominic again!!!

We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
