Do you know you can see the giant Shoebill Stork – the dinosaur bird – just 1 hour from Entebbe Airport? Most tourists miss it!
Mabamba Swamp is the ONLY place in Uganda where you have 90% chance to see shoebill in one morning. I went yesterday and we saw 2!
Where is Mabamba Swamp Located?
Mabamba Swamp is in Mpigi District, on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, 50km west of Kampala and just 20km from Entebbe town. Size is 2,424 hectares – huge papyrus swamp home to about 26 shoebills chicks inclusive.
It is a Ramsar site – internationally protected wetland with over 300 bird species, home for bird watching
How To Get To Mabamba Swamp – 2 Ways:
Option 1: By Boat from Entebbe (BEST & Fastest – I Recommend This)
This is what 95% of tourists use. Go to Nakiwogo Landing Site in Entebbe (near Port Alice). Take traditional motorized wooden canoe across Lake Victoria. Boat ride is 45 minutes one way – very scenic, you see fish eagles and islands.
From Nakiwogo you transfer to small canoe with local guide to enter narrow channels where shoebills hide. while on the canoe you have a chance of seeing some birds
Option 2: By Road from Kampala / Entebbe (Cheaper but Longer)
Drive via Kisubi – Nakawuka – Kasanje road. Takes 2 hours from Entebbe, 2.5 hours from Kampala. You need 4×4 in rainy season. Road is village road, bumpy but you see local life.
If you are staying in Kampala, we pick you at 6am and drive.

Best Time to Visit Mabamba
Shoebill seen year-round, but dry seasons June-September and December-February are best – low water, birds can’t hide. Come early morning 7am-11am, they hunt then. Midday they hide from sun.
