How Many Cultural Sites Are In Uganda?

Uganda is often called the Pearl of Africa because of its diversity. The country is home to more than 65 tribes, each with its own language, food, dance, and history. This diversity has created hundreds of cultural sites across the country.

So How Many Are There?

According to the Uganda Museum, Uganda has over 700 cultural sites spread across all regions. Out of these, more than 20 are officially gazetted and protected as National Cultural Heritage Sites. On the global level, Uganda has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with Kasubi Tombs being the only cultural one.

Uganda’s Top Cultural Sites By Region

Central Uganda – The Heart of Buganda Kingdom
This region has the highest number of cultural sites. The most famous is the Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi on Kasubi Hill in Kampala. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the burial ground for four Buganda kings. The main building is made entirely of traditional materials and shows authentic Ganda architecture.

Other key sites in central include Mengo Royal Palace and Bulange Parliament, Namugongo Martyrs Shrine where Christian martyrs were killed, Naggalabi Coronation Site where Buganda kings are crowned, and Wamala Tombs.

Western Uganda – Kingdoms of Bunyoro, Tooro and Ankole
In the west, you find Mparo Royal Tombs in Hoima where Bunyoro kings rest, Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal for Tooro Kingdom, and Igongo Cultural Centre in Mbarara which preserves the history of Ankole Kingdom. You can also visit the Empaako naming tradition sites and Bakonzo cultural sites in the Rwenzori foothills.

Eastern Uganda – Ancient Rock Art
Eastern Uganda is home to the oldest cultural site in the country. Nyero Rock Paintings in Kumi District are over 3,000 years old and were painted by ancient hunter-gatherers. You can also visit Kakoro Rock Paintings and Busoga Kingdom palaces in Jinja.

Northern Uganda – Rich Nilotic Heritage
In the north, cultural sites celebrate the traditions of Acholi, Langi and Alur people. You can visit the Palabek Kal War Memorial, Chief Philips Obol’s palace, and many community cultural villages that preserve traditional dance, food and crafts.

More Than Just Sites – Living Culture

What makes Uganda’s cultural sites special is that they are still alive. You can watch the Maganda dance, listen to traditional storytelling, try millet bread and learn how to make bark cloth.

Our group was driven around by Derrick. He was an excellent driver, very careful, and took great care. He would ensure that we were all sitted and he closed the doors before setting off. He looks very young but a careful and confident driver. He is very respectful and would recommend him and will use him again. He is very professional 👏 👌

Me and my friends went to Murchison Falls with Dominic for 3 days and had the most amazing time! Dominic was such a wonderful guide, always telling us about all the animals and answered all the 1000 questions I asked him! He was always attentive and curious, and looked like he was having the best time with us as well :) could not recommend him enough as guide! Will definitely be back to Uganda soon and book a safari with Dominic again!!!

We did a 4 day safari, which included Queen elisabeth park, chimp hike and lake mburo park. Everything from the activities to accommodations were great and Dominic is a fantastic guide, so I will definitely choose then again when I return for gorilla trekking!

We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo, saw an incredible variety of animals, and stayed in some truly amazing accommodations! Our guide Dominic showed us the famous highlights and also took us to hidden gems and breathtaking viewpoints that made us fall even more in love with Uganda. And Dominic is not only a fantastic guide, he is also an excellent photographer! :) One of my personal highlights was the walking safari in Lake Mburo. Being able to experience the wildlife on foot was something really special and completely different from a game drive. We hope to have the chance to travel with Lena Tours again in the future. There is still so much more to discover, and we would love to come back for another adventure!
