What is World Tourism Day?
World Tourism Day is the biggest global celebration for travel. It happens once a year on September 27. It was started in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization to remind the world how important tourism is for jobs, culture, peace and economic growth.
The date was chosen because on September 27, 1970, the Statutes of the World Tourism Organization were adopted. That document made tourism a global force for development.
When is World Tourism Day in 2026?
In 2026, World Tourism Day will be celebrated on Sunday, September 27, 2026. It is an annual event that happens only once a year, so tourism companies, governments and travelers around the world prepare months in advance.
This year’s official global host is Mbale district Eastern uganda, where world leaders, ministers and tourism experts will gather.
What is the Theme for World Tourism Day 2026?
Every year World Tourism Day has a new theme. For 2026, the official theme announced by UN Tourism is “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
This theme is about how technology is changing travel. From AI that helps you plan your trip, to digital tools that help small cultural villages reach travelers, to data that helps protect heritage sites.
But the core message remains the same – tourism should be sustainable, inclusive and human-centered.
Why World Tourism Day Matters for Uganda
For Uganda, World Tourism Day is very important. Tourism is one of the top foreign exchange earners. It creates jobs for guides, drivers, hotel staff, craftspeople and cultural performers. It also helps preserve our culture.
The Ministry of Tourism, Uganda Tourism Board and private companies like Lena Tours organize cultural fairs to showcase Uganda’s diversity.
It is a day to remind Ugandans that our culture is our wealth. Our kingdoms, our traditions, our food, our languages – these are tourism products the world wants to see.
